A Wedding Service at the Danish Lutheran Church of Vancouver, B.C.

The Groom and the Best Man arrive early and are seated 20 minutes before the service is to begin.

Kirkens Klokke Ringes

Klokkeringningen afsluttes af tre gange tre bedeslag.

Bell Ringing

The bell rings—ending with three times three strokes.

The bell ringing begins when the Bride arrives and is ready.

Traditionally the ringing consists of 100 strokes followed by the Prayer Strokes, which are three times three single strokes. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Many people will say these words to themselves as a little prayer before the Church service begins.

Indgang

Menigheden rejser sig, når bruden kommer ind.

Processional

The congregation stands as the Bride enters.

The Flower Girls and Boys, the Ring Bearer, the Bridesmaids, and the Maid of Honour precede the Bride down the aisle. The Bride then follows. She is normally escorted; Bride on the left, Escort on the right. The Bride carries her bouquet of flowers.

The Bride and Escort stop when they reach the front pews and are greeted by the Groom.

The Maid of Honour takes over from the Escort and leads the Bride the last few steps to her seat.

Seating plan

The congregation sits when the Bride is seated. The Bride and Groom may choose to stand throughout the service; in that case, the congregation sits when the Bride has reached her spot.

Velkomst

Præsten ønsker alle velkommen.

Welcome

The pastor welcomes everybody.
Amen. Pastor: The Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. 2nd Corinthians 13:14

Indledningskollekt

Prayer

The pastor reads a prayer from the altar: Let us all pray!
Lord, our God, Heavenly Father, we thank You for giving us life with all its gifts. We thank You for those who have shown us love and have been a help to us until this day.
Amen. We ask You: Give us what we need and renew every day the mutual love, that is a reflection of Your eternal care and grace towards us, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Læsninger

Præsten: Således står der skrevet:

Readings

Pastor: Please stand for the readings from the Holy Scripture:
When God had created heaven and earth, the sea, the sun, the moon and the stars, all plants and animals, He said, Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created humankind in His image; in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them. And God blessed them. Genesis 1:26–28
Præsten: Og vor Herre Jesus Kristus siger: Pastor: And our Lord Jesus Christ says:
Have you not read, that He that made them at the beginning, made them male and female, and said: For this cause you shall leave your father and mother and shall be joined unto your mate and you two shall be one. What therefore God has joined together, let no-one put asunder. Matthew 19:4–6
Præsten: Og apostlen Paulus skriver: Pastor: And the Apostle Paul writes:
Bær hinandens byrder; således opfylder I Kristi lov. Bear you one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. Colossians 3:12–14

Første Salme

First Hymn

Tale

Præsten holder en kort tale for brudeparret.

Pastor’s Address

The pastor gives a short speech to the Bride and Groom.
The more time you have spent in our church the more personal the pastor can make her speech…

Tilspørgsel

Brudeparret træder frem foran alteret.

Wedding Vows

The Bride and the Groom come to the altar.
The Bride leaves her bouquet of flowers on her chair or with the Maid of Honour. Bride and Groom face the altar; Bride on the left, Groom on the right. The Maid of Honour, the Best Man, the Bridesmaids and Groom’s Men line up at the altar as well.

Brudgommen: Ja!

Pastor: I now ask you N.N., will you have N.N. standing by your side to be your wedded wife?

Groom: I will!

The pastor first asks the Groom two questions. The pastor will pretend to read the questions out of her book looking you in the eyes only when you are expected to answer.

The answer to both questions is I will!

Brudgommen: Ja!

Pastor: Will you love and honour her and live with her for better or for worse in what fortune God Almighty may bestow upon you as a wedded husband should live with his wedded wife until death do you part?

Groom: I will!

Bruden: Ja!

Pastor: In the same manner, I ask you N.N., will you have N.N. standing by your side to be your wedded husband?

Bride: I will!

Then the pastor asks the Bride.

Bruden: Ja!

Pastor: Will you love and honour him and live with him for better or for worse in what fortune God Almighty may bestow upon you as a wedded wife should live with her wedded husband until death do you part?

Bride: I will!

Erklæring

Præsten: Så giv hinanden hånd derpå!

Pronouncement

Pastor: Then join your right hands together.
The Bride and Groom face the altar again and hold hands, right hand in right hand.
The pastor holds her hand on top of the joined hands and says: Since you have already promised each other to live together in marriage and have now openly witnessed the same before God and this company, and have declared the same by joining of hands, I now pronounce you to be husband and wife before God and man.

Udveksling af Ringe

Exchange of Rings

The Ring Bearer presents the rings. The Bride and Groom face each other and exchange rings.

Forbøn

Mens brudeparret knæler, siger præsten med håndspålæggelse: Lad os alle bede!

Intercession

The Bride and Groom kneel at the altar, the pastor puts her hand upon them and continues: Therefore we will pray for God’s blessing on you:
Almighty God, who created man and woman that they may live together in holy matrimony and blessed them. We ask you, bless this man and this woman, and let them always live in your grace and in love for each other.

Fadervor

Præsten: Hør os i Jesu navn:

The Lord’s Prayer

Pastor: In the name of Jesus Christ, hear us, when we all pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
giv os i dag vort daglige brød, Give us this day our daily bread;
og forlad os vor skyld, som også vi forlader vore skyldnere, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
og led os ikke ind i fristelse, men fri os fra det onde. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen! Amen

Velsignelse

Menigheden rejser sig, og præsten læser velsignelsen:

Benediction

The congregation stands for the Benediction.
Amen! Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen! Numbers 6:24–26
The Bride and Groom rise.

The Bride and Groom, the Maid of Honour, and the Best Man sign the Marriage Licence. Then the pastor signs everything and puts the church’s seal on the documents.
Brudeparret sætter sig.

The Best Man or the Maid of Honour passes the bouquet of flowers to the Bride.
