Order of Service with Baptism
The Danish Lutheran Church of Vancouver, B.C.

Kirkens Klokke Ringes

Klokkeringningen afsluttes af tre gange tre bedeslag.

Bell Ringing

The bell rings—ending with three times three strokes.
Traditionally the ringing consists of 100 strokes followed by the Prayer Strokes, which are three times three single strokes. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Many people will say these words to themselves as a little prayer before the Church service begins.

Hilsen

Præsten: Herren være med jer! Menigheden: Og med din ånd.

Greeting

Pastor: The Lord be with you. Congregation: And with your spirit.

Indledningskollekt

Præsten beder en bøn fra alteret. Menigheden svarer: Amen!

Collect of the Day

The pastor says a prayer from the altar. The congregation responds: Amen!

First Reading

The congregation stands while the pastor reads from the Old Testament.
The congregation stands when we meet God in the readings from the altar and from the pulpit (and during Baptism, and when the Holy Communion is instituted). Consequently, we do not stand during the hymns.

Anden Salme

Second Hymn

Second Reading

The congregation stands while the pastor reads from the New Testament.
As most Lutheran churches we use a prescribed list of readings. That the readings are determined ahead of time keeps the sermon focussed on our faith even if the prescribed readings occasionally prove a challenge to the pastor who wants to respond to current events.

Baptismal Hymn

The pastor announces that there will be a baptism and that we will sing the baptismal hymn in the Order of Service:
Now is a good time to take off your child’s hat.
Herren strækker ud sin arm,
små vil han velsigne;
kommer, små til Jesu barm,
lærer ham at ligne!
Døb, genfød dem, Herre from,
dybt i livets kilde!
Aldrig de til død og dom
sig fra dig forvilde!
Lo, the Lord extends His hand
to bestow His favour;
children, come at His command,
unto Him, your Saviour.
Lord, baptise them in Your name,
give them life eternal,
keep them safe from sin and shame
in Your pastures vernal.
Lo, the Lord extends His hand (GGG215, Herren strækker ud sin arm) by N.F.S. Grundtvig.
After the baptismal hymn, the baptismal candidate with parents and godparents come up to the font. Any children in the church are also welcome to come up to the font.

Lovprisning og bøn

Praise and Prayer

Pastor: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has born us anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1st Peter 1:3
Præsten: Lad os alle bede! Pastor: Let us all pray:
Pastor: We thank You Heavenly Father, that through Your only begotten Son, You have given this Holy Baptism, in which You make us Your children and give us the Holy Spirit with the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.
Pastor: We beseech You graciously to receive this child whom we bring before You: Make him a member of Your believing congregation; and keep him in communion with You now and forever.
Præsten: Amen. Pastor: Amen.

Readings

The congregation stands and the pastor continues: Let us all stand and listen to what our Lord Jesus Christ says:
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you to the close of the age. Matthew 28:18–20
Præsten: Og om børnene siger han: Pastor: And concerning the children He says:
Let the children come to me, do not hinder them, for to such belongs the Kingdom of God. Truly I tell you, who ever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it. And He took them in His arms, put His hands upon them and blessed them. Mark 10:14–15
Pastor: Let us therefore help this child to obtain God’s blessing by baptising him in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Korstegnelse

Sign of the Cross

The pastor makes with her hand a cross over the face and chest of the baptismal candidate and says: Receive the sign of the Holy Cross upon your brow and upon your breast, as a token that you shall belong to the crucified Lord Jesus Christ.

Try to hold your child so that he is facing the pastor.

The baptismal candidate is marked with God’s sign so that God knows him as His own. Thus, the Sign of the Cross is a promise that God’s love can always find the baptismal candidate.

Præsten: Hvad er barnets navn?

Du: N.N.

Pastor: What is the name of the child?

You: N.N.

Traditionally, the person carrying the child answers the pastor, but both parents (or parents and godparents) may answer together.

Say the full name of your child. You told our pastor your child’s name when you arranged this baptism, so our pastor will get it right even if you mumble.

Trosbekendelse

Præsten: N.N., forsager du Djævelen og alle hans gerninger og alt hans væsen?

Du: Ja!

Creed

N.N., do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways?

You: I do!

That is five questions, two short ones, one long, and two short. The pastor will pretend to read the questions out of her book looking you in the eyes only when you are expected to answer.

You should answer I do! to the first four questions, the renunciation and the questions about what we believe in, and I will! to the fifth question.

The ‘I do!’ answers mean Yes, I want God’s promises to hold also for me as opposed to I want to be my own maker and master.

Do you believe in God the Father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth?

You: I do!

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is sitting at the right hand of God the Father, almighty. From there He will come again to judge the living and the dead?

You: I do!

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?

You: I do!

Vil du døbes på denne tro?

Du: Ja!

Will you be baptised in this faith?

You: I will!

Amen.

Baptism

The pastor pours water three times over the head of the baptismal candidate and says: N.N., I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hold your child lying on his back over the font. Please do practice holding a child over the bathroom sink.

The pastor baptises in God’s name. Therefore the level of piety of the pastor, parents, or the baptismal candidate is irrelevant, only God matters.

You may think of the water as a bath which washes away your sin. You can express the same idea stronger by describing Baptism as a death by drowning. The “old” man and his broken relationship with God dies; a new man is re-born out of the water which is then like the amniotic fluid in the womb. In this re-birth you receive God as father. The meeting of God and man in Baptism, in Communion, or in a prayer, is always a mystery which cannot be explained but we may believe that it happens.

The pastor will dry your child’s hair with a napkin embroidered with the letters INRI for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudæorum, or Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the inscription the Romans put on Christ’s cross. You get to keep the napkin; holding the napkin is a nice task for an older sibling.

Amen. The pastor puts her hand on the head of the newly baptised and says: Almighty God, the father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has now born you again by water and the Holy Spirit, and has given you remission of sins, strengthen you with His grace unto eternal life. Amen. Again, try to hold your child so that he is facing the pastor.
If more children are to be baptised, the pastor will repeat the ritual from the Sign of the Cross.

Fadervor

Præsten: Lad os alle bede:

The Lord’s Prayer

Pastor: Let us all pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
giv os i dag vort daglige brød, Give us this day our daily bread;
og forlad os vor skyld, som også vi forlader vore skyldnere, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;
og led os ikke ind i fristelse, men fri os fra det onde. and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen! Amen
Præsten: Fred være med jer. Amen. Pastor: Peace be with you. Amen.

Faddertiltale

Menigheden sidder ned under faddertiltalen.

Instruction of Godparents

The congregation sits while the pastor instructs the parents and godparents of their duties.
Pastor: You who are parents and sponsors or godparents for this child are witnesses that he is baptised in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are to remember your duty towards this child whose parents and godparents you are. You parents shall bring your child up in the Christian faith, in order that he may remain in Christ, even as he now through baptism has been grafted into Him. And you godparents if the parents die before the child arrives at the age of discretion, you shall, if you are present, see that he receives instruction in the Christian faith. May the Lord help you to do so.

Grafting is a technique that allows one plant to grow on the stem and root of another. The image that we are grafted onto Christ is taken from John 15:5 and illustrates our dependency on God as well as our intimacy with Him.

From the hymn by N.F.S. Grundtvig—who obviously based his hymn on the Agnus Dei of the Catholic mass. (GGG230, O, du Guds Lam! med korsets skam)
Præsten læser resten af nadverbønnen. The pastor reads the remainder of the Communion prayer.

Fadervor

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen! Amen

Altergang

Menigheden rejser sig, når præsten læser indstiftelsesordene:

Communion

The congregation stands for the Consecration.
Pastor: In the night in which He was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, He took the cup saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. 1st Corinthians 11:23–25
All baptised Christians are welcome to participate in Communion. If you cannot negotiate the steps to the altar, please take Communion in one of the front pews. If you cannot kneel, please remain standing. Our regular communion wafers contain wheat; if you prefer the rice based alternative, please leave your hands on the railing as the wafers are distributed. If you prefer grape juice to wine, please hold your finger over the cup as a sign to the pastor.
Efter altergang synger vi:
Lykkes og trives,
styrkes, oplives,
skal dine små,
vokse i kræfter,
stige derefter,
højeloft nå,
himle, hvor øjet, som græder ej mer,
gudernes Gud i sin herlighed ser.
After the Communion we sing:
Rich in Your blessing,
onward progressing
are now Your friends,
strengthened in spirit,
each by Your merit
upwards ascends
till, when at home in that city of gold,
all shall in wonder Your presence behold.
A stanza from Fair beyond telling (GGG201, Hyggelig, rolig, Gud, er din bolig) by N.F.S. Grundtvig.

Slutningskollekt

Præsten beder en bøn fra alteret. Menigheden svarer: Amen!

Thanksgiving Prayer

The pastor says a prayer from the altar. The congregation responds: Amen!

Velsignelse

Menigheden rejser sig, og præsten læser velsignelsen:

Benediction

The congregation stands for the Benediction.
Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24–26
Menigheden svarer: Amen, amen, amen! The congregation responds: Amen, amen, amen! This is the three-fold amen which in North America is known as the Danish Amen.

Femte Salme

Fifth Hymn

Udgangsbøn

Closing Prayer

Announcements

The pastor reads the announcements and then asks the congregation to stand and sing Tider skal komme.
Tider skal komme,
tider skal henrulle,
slægt skal følge slægters gang;
aldrig forstummer
tonen fra Himlen
i sjælens glade pilgrimssang.
That we end every service by singing this stanza from Beauty is ’round us (GGG077, Dejlig er jorden) by B.S. Ingemann was instituted by Pastor Rasmussen.

Postludium

Postlude

We would like the baptismal family to leave first (together with the pastor) so that we can all stand welcoming the new member of God's Holy Universal Church.

Then please stay in the Narthex just outside the Sanctuary, so that the congregation has the opportunity to congratulate you.
