Bell Ringing

The bell rings—ending with three times three strokes.

Traditionally the ringing consists of 100 strokes followed by the Prayer Strokes, which are three times three single strokes. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Many people will say these words to themselves as a little prayer before the Church service begins.

Introduction

The president of Dansk Kirke i Udlandet, Bishop Johannes W. Jacobsen reads:

Dengang kong Salomo byggede Gud Herren et tempel i Jerusalem, sagde han: Gud satte solen på himmelen, men selv vil han bo i mulmet. Nu har vi bygget en kirke, for at Guds navn kan bo midt iblandt os. Kan Gud da virkelig bo på jorden? Nej, himlenes himle kan ikke rumme ham, langt mindre det hus, vi har bygget til ham. Men vi mennesker må have huse at samles i. Og til os sendte Gud sin kære Søn, Jesus, døbt ved et menneskes hånd i vand, stadfæstet af Guds hellige Ånd, og han sad til bords i vore huse. Og da han blev optaget i herlighed, sendte han Talsmanden, sandhedens Ånd, for at bede med os og vidne for os i ord og sakramenter. Derfor vil vi nu tage dette hus i brug og med Guds ord og bøn gøre alle ting rede, så evangeliet kan forkyndes og velsignelsen lyde fra alter og prædikestol, mennesker modtages ved døbefont og nadverbord, og sammen bede til Gud og takke ham, når vi spiller og synger til Guds ære.

When King Solomon built a temple to the Lord in Jerusalem, he said: The Lord has set the sun in the heavens, but has said that He would dwell in thick darkness. (1st Kings 8:12) Now we have built a church so that God’s name can live in our midst. Can God, then, really live on earth? No, the heavens’ heaven cannot contain Him, much less the house we have built for Him. But we humans must have houses in which to gather. And to us did God send His dear Son, Jesus, baptised in water by the hand of a man, confirmed by God’s Holy Spirit, and He ate in our houses. And when He was taken up in glory, He sent the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, to pray with us and testify to us in words and sacraments. Therefore we will now begin using this house so that the Gospel can be proclaimed and blessings be heard from altar and pulpit, people can be received at the Baptismal font and at the Communion table and together pray to God and thank Him when we play or sing to God’s honour.

The stanzas of this hymn by N.F.S. Grundtvig (1843) are spread through the consecration part of the service.

Where God does not what to build, bricks and mortar are useless, because more than what worldly people may think is needed; building a house of God, whether in heaven or on earth, is a matter of the Word of God.

Reading from the Altar

The Altar Bible and the other books belonging to the altar are presented to the bishop who reads Genesis 1:1–5:

The chalice and plate used for Communion are placed on the altar, and the pastor reads 1st Corinthians 10:15–17:

The pastor reads 1st Corinthians 1:21–25:

Declaration

The bishop goes before the altar and declares:

Så erklærer jeg nu, at dette hus og alt, hvad det rummer, ved Guds ord og bøn er indviet og taget i brug som Guds hus og kirke for den danske menighed i British Columbia. Men dersom Herren ikke bygger huset, er bygmestrenes møje forgæves. Derfor vil vi bede: So now I declare this house and all that it contains by God’s Word and by prayer consecrated and inaugurated as God’s house and church for the Danish congregation in British Columbia. But unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labour in vain. (Psalm 127:1) Therefore we will pray:
Himmelske Fader! Du har skabt jorden som et hjem for mennesker! Giv os, som ved synden er blevet fremmede i verden, her i dit hus at være omsluttede af din kærlighed og høre, at du har gjort os til dine børn ved din Søn, Jesus Kristus, vor broder. Creed

The congregation stands while reading the Creed. The bishop: Lad os bekende vor kristne tro: Let us confess our Christian faith:
Vi forsager Djævelen og alle hans gerninger og alt hans væsen. We renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways.
Vi tror på Gud Fader, den Almægtige, himlens og jordens skaber. We believe in God the Father, almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
Vi tror på Jesus Kristus, hans enbårne søn, vor Herre, som er undfanget ved Helligånden, født af Jomfru Maria, pint under Pontius Pilatus, korsfæstet, død og begravet, nedfaret til dødsriget, på tredie dag opstanden fra de døde, opfaret til himmels, siddende ved Gud Faders, den Almægtiges, højre hånd, hvorfra han skal komme at dømme levende og døde. He who is the Way and the Life and who has all might on earth, He has given us the Lord’s Prayer as a seal upon the covenant of Baptism where His wrote us, re-born by water and the Spirit, in His hand.
